Based on the study and analysis of historical and pedagogical literature, the author established approaches to the definition of the private initiative and charity in education. The charitable activities in education are described as voluntary, selfless, socially significant activities aimed at conscious donations to support the development of the education sector. The author of the article mentions the factors that determined the private initiative in the field of the education of scientists in Kharkiv Province during the researched period. It is proved that different individuals, public organizations, institutions, and officials were helping the state to improve the material base of higher educational institutions and were supporting them in research, as well as supporting poor students during the second half of the nineteenth &amp;ndash; early twentieth centuries.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article highlights the private initiative in education of medical and pharmaceutical scientists in Kharkiv Province during the second half of the nineteenth &amp;ndash; early twentieth centuries.
