On the basis of theoretical analysis, we can determine the concept of what ‘stress’ is. The article also gives the knowledge about sports activity stress factors of inward and outward nature and the peculiarities of their exposure, including the specifics of competition activity in different sports. It is noticed that effective stress management is provided by a complex of methods and means aimed at developing the mental processes and qualities of an athlete’s identity, psychological assistance which involves psychodiagnostics, psychoprophilaxis and psychocorrection. There are some ways which can help the athletes to generate stress resistance. They include: endurance and stamina training, self-esteem boost, development of creative abilities and implementation of different types of psychic self-regulation.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>This article describes a problem of how stress can have a negative effect on sports competition activity.
