Features of the manifestation of negative narcissism in family relationships

Introduction. The study of narcissism within the psychoanalytic tradition has a rich and long history, which was formalized in a separate direction in Freud's article "On Narcissism" (1914). Currently, in the space of mental disorders, narcissism occupies a noticeable growing segment and is included in the list of severe personality disorders with a devastating effect on relationships and personality development, and is also characterized by a complex process of psychotherapy. However, the study of negative narcissism in family relationships has received insufficient attention. This determined the idea of the study, which includes the study of the filling of relations in the family with negative internal processes, which leads to a violation of the functioning of a specific structural component (marital, parent-child, sibling relations) or the entire structure of family relations. The purpose of the study was to study the impact of negative narcissism of spouses on marital and parent-child relations. Methodology and methods. An empirical study was conducted in 2014-2021, and in 2021 a scientometric study was conducted with an unlimited time period on family problems on foreign and domestic scientific information platforms. This made it possible to determine the directions of research on negative narcissism and highlight the current indicators of its manifestation in the family. Indicators of relationships in the family are collected using the method “Questionnaire of interpersonal relations” by V. Shutets and evaluated by spouses, and negative narcissism was studied from the questionnaire “Narcissistic personality traits” O.A. Shamshikova, N.M. Klepikova. Results. Data from a discriminant analysis of manifestations of negative narcissism of spouses in the family showed that in marital relations there is a significant impact of negative narcissism on a significant range of types of relationships compared to relationships with children, which is determined by the primacy and depth of these relationships, which are an early space of narcissistic expansion of spouses. The dominant influence on the construction of relationships was shown by a “grandiose sense of self-importance” and “the need for constant attention and admiration”, which is consistent with the theoretical provisions of the narcissistic personal organization about filling the relationship with aggression, superiority, tight control, excessive demands on family members, which disrupts interaction and destroys relationships. Gender features of the manifestation of negative narcissism have been established, indicating a more pronounced narcissism in women and its more complex structure in marital relations. Parent-child relationships also act as a space for the manifestation of negative narcissism of spouses, due to the perception of children as a continuation of the realization of their own negative needs and the space of narcissistic expansion. This makes it difficult to harmonize relations with children and causes the perception of them as an obstacle in their own lives, which provokes unreasonable demands on them.
