Adaptation strategies and identity types among university foreign students
 

Introduction. The Russian Federation is an active participant in the international market for educational services and enrolls foreign students at its universities. A type of ethnic identity serves as a crucial personal determinant and makes a considerable impact on adaptation of the students to a new ethnocultural setting. The purpose. To identify and compare the acculturation strategies, adaptation challenges, and types of ethnic identity among foreign students enrolled in universities of Yekaterinburg, Russia. Materials and methods. The study examines 71 participants (43 first-year students and 28 students in their fourth to sixth years) from Lebanon, India, China, Peru, Sudan, Yemen, Zimbabwe, and Morocco. The study was conducted at three universities in Yekaterinburg, Russia: Ural State Medical University, Ural State Mining University, and Ural State Law University. The study methods employed questionnaires, tests, and surveys. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale was utilized to assess the level of self-esteem; John Berry's Acculturation Questionnaire was used to identify acculturation strategies. The type of ethnic identity was determined using the survey developed by G. Soldatova and S. Ryzhova. Statistical analysis of the results was performed using StatTech 4.7.1 (OOO StatTech, Russia). Results and discussion. The findings of the study indicate that foreign students enrolled in the first year in the universities of Yekaterinburg encounter significant challenges when communicating with members of the opposite sex, making friends, and locating and purchasing their favorite products. A majority of foreign students employ integration strategies, which facilitate their adaptation to the new ethnocultural reality most effectively. Conclusion. According to the identified average values of ethnic identity types, the dominant characteristics of ethnic identity include “norm” and “ethnic indifference”.
